Buddy was cruelly set on fire and strangled with an extension cord – but look at him today.

It’s truly shocking how cruel some individuals can be towards dogs. These innocent creatures often suffer from unnecessary pain and distress.

This was the situation for one dog, who fell victim to a terrible attack that left his face severely burned. Fortunately, he has been making a remarkable recovery, thanks to some compassionate veterinarians.

In April 2021, the Tunica Humane Society reported on a dog named Buddy, who was described as a “happy and carefree dog” that was “never a threat to anyone.” He was found with his face completely scorched and charred black, with an extension cord wrapped around his neck.

As reported by WTVA, a child eventually admitted to igniting Buddy, but due to being under the age of 12, he cannot face prosecution.

Buddy was taken in by the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi, where he received medical care from the Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Under their supervision, Buddy started a gradual yet promising journey towards recovery.

“Buddy’s vital signs are stable, but like any burn victim, this is just the beginning of a long and challenging journey ahead,” stated Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and veterinary surgeon, to WTVA.

“We are ensuring his comfort, changing his bandages regularly, and addressing any issues that come up.”

Fortunately, in spite of the alarming injury, Buddy seems to have retained his eyesight. The Tunica Humane Society reports that the veterinarians believe his eyes are still in good condition. The damage to his eyelids will be repaired through surgery, and he is expected to have some vision once he recovers.

Buddy has had to wear bandages that cover his entire upper body. Nevertheless, he has maintained a positive attitude throughout this ordeal.

“He keeps making progress every day,” the Humane Society shared on Facebook. “He has never let his doctors down. Everyone involved has been very happy with how well his skin grafts are healing. Although burn wounds take a long time to heal, Buddy is doing exceptionally well.”

“During his bandage change today, there was a noticeable improvement in the look of his face. As Buddy continues to recover, he is also learning some basic commands.

“This kind and gentle dog didn’t deserve what he went through,” they posted on Facebook. “He posed no danger to anyone. It was incredibly cruel and premeditated.”

“Let’s hold onto hope for Buddy, that his terrible injuries will not be for nothing. That somehow, something positive will arise from this tragedy. That change will happen and justice will prevail in situations like Buddy’s.”

Since Buddy’s story became a sensation a few years back, he has made significant progress and received excellent care from the veterinarians at Mississippi State.

He had skin grafts to treat his burns and needed fewer bandages over time. Gradually, he started to regain his former self.

“With his ears now free from the bandages, he is noticeably happier and more playful. I believe he is experiencing immense joy as he gradually returns to a normal life,” reported the Tunica Humane Society last month.

On August 7, the rescue team shared a significant milestone in Buddy’s recovery.

For the first time, Buddy’s bandages, which had completely obscured his eyes since the incident, were taken off without him needing heavy sedation — allowing Buddy to see for the first time in over three months.

“His eyes were truly open and he was very aware,” the Humane Society stated. “In response to your countless prayers, YES, Buddy can still see.”

“Buddy’s last clear memory of sight was during the final, tragic moments just before a child set his face on fire. In an instant, this dog’s entire life changed.”

At last, being able to see has been a significant milestone in this poor pup’s journey back to normalcy, and his caregivers report that his personality is starting to sparkle once more.

“Buddy’s entire demeanor has transformed since he experienced daylight,” Sandy Williams, the director of the Tunica Humane Society, shared with WREG.

“He is joyful and full of energy, strolling through the hospital with a big ball in his mouth. He adores balls. He carries them around for everyone to admire.”

A video shared by the rescue captures Buddy enjoying a game of fetch:

Although this is a significant advancement, Buddy is not completely out of danger yet. He is still in the healing process, and his eyelids will require some attention to ensure his eyes are protected, as noted by the Humane Society on Facebook.

Due to the extent of his injuries, he will have special needs for the remainder of his life.

“His skin will be sensitive, his eyes may need eye drops, and he’ll need to apply sunscreen when he’s outdoors,” Williams shared with WREG. “He won’t be able to stay outside in the sun for long periods.”

Many of you have been inquiring about Buddy lately. Here’s a very uplifting update from his forever mom, Dr.…
